On the recommendation of a colleague, I recently played the game “Journey” available from the PlayStation Network Store and made by “thatgamecompany“, so I thought I’d write a post about it.

The game was a new experience for me as, in my naiveté I was unaware that it was possible for relatively small companies to make and distribue games. As a result of the PSN Store it is financially viable it would seem, for “non-mainstream” games to be produced which allow drastically different gaming experiences than certainly I was used to.

The game is figuratively a journey, and a core concept of the game is that is all the player knows. The game is a journey; a journey which must be experienced in on continuous motion. As a result, it is not possible to save whilst travelling through your Journey, although once completed, levels can be replayed at will.

Contrary to the typical gaming experience (certainly my typical gaming experience) Journey is a relaxing and exploratory experience. You guide your character through a strange world which is accompanied by both a fantastic soundtrack, and sound design.

The overall playing experience lasts just shy of 2 hours, and some would likely consider the £9.99 price tag high for this amount of gameplay. I can only say that in my opinion it was worth it for a breath of fresh air, and a truly unique gaming experience.

With the release of Google’s new Dropbox competitor “Drive”, not only has another option for desktop file syncing become available, but extremely competitively priced cloud storage is now available to all. This post details how to easily setup your own online data archive using Google Drive.

Firstly, let’s clarify what is meant by a data archive. This is not for storing data you want to access regularly, not is it for syncing data between computers. Given the way in which Google Drive functions, your data archive could function in this way however this would likely result in a large amount of data being sync’ed between each computer on which google drive is installed.

For the purposes of this article, the archive will be used for storing data which is likely too big to feasibly burn to (several) DVDs, contains data which you don’t necessarily want to delete, and is used for storing data which may be needed at some point in the future. For the audio inclined, a good example would be archiving old session files, mixes and the like.

If you have a large amount of hard drive space, then Google drive can simply be used to create multiple backups of your archived data. However, this post will focus on storing one copy of the data on Google’s servers, as this data is either backed up via some other means, or you trust Google enough not to loose your data (which is a safe bet, considering they backup the entirity of Google Mail onto magnetic tape, as well as electronic backups).

Sign up for google drive by visiting drive.google.com.

When your drive is ready, (you’ll be emailed) on the web interface, create a folder on the root of your Drive called “Upload Only”.

You can test the procedure with the free 5GB of storage you get with Drive, however upgrading to the 25GB plan for £1.55 per month is recommended to fully benefit from an online archive. This storage is also scalable if you wish to upgrade / downgrade at a later date (use link when logged in).

Install Google Drive on a computer which has access to the data you wish to archive.

When running the initial setup you can choose where abouts the files synced via Google Drive are saved – your choice. You can also choose to sync all files or specific folders. Choose the ‘specific folders’ option and select the “Upload Only” folder.

Drag and drop the files and folders you wish to archive into the upload only folder and leave the sync to finish (the Drive icon shows sync progress).

Once synchronised, on the web interface move the contents of the “Upload Only” folder into another folder on your Google Drive (most logically, a folder called “Archive”).

The files on your desktop Google Drive will now have been moved to the trash. You can delete them to reclaim the space, as they are saved on Google’s servers.

Delete the original files to fully reclaim the space, or make a mental note that these files can be deleted if more space is required.

A DVD backup never goes amiss too!

There are several shortcuts which I use so much, the thought of not being able to use them scares me. Hopefully some people may find these useful, bear in mind, most of these require command focus on the Edit window (Cmd+Alt+1 or switch to the Mix window and then back to the Edit window):

Cmd+Shift+O – Open previous session.

A – Trim from left region boundary to edit cursor.

S – Trim from right region boundary to edit cursor.

Shift+S – Solo track which currently has the edit cursor on it. Works well with Options > Solo Mode > X-OR for video or analysis work).

Shift+M – Mute track which currently has the edit cursor on it.

P or ; – Move edit cursor up (P) or down (;) tracks.

< or > – Nudge backwards (<) or forwards (>) Especially useful on a laptop with no numeric keypad. Also M or / does the same but by the next higher nudge value (e.g. 1s instead of 0.5s).

Shift+R – Record arm track which currently has the edit cursor on it.

Alt+F – Zoom to fill screen with selection.

Ctrl+Up or Down Arrow – Change track height of track which currently has the edit cursor. Also works with +Alt (“do to all”).

7n (number pad) – Turn the click on / off.

Ctrl+Alt+Cmd+W – Hide / show all floating windows.

Down Arrow Followed by Left Arrow – place edit cursor where playback head is (down) and scroll into view (left). Useful when window scrolling is set to none and the current playback position is off screen.

Up Arrow Whilst Playing Back – Create / extend edit section to current playback head position.

Cmd+Space – Record (requires spotlight shortcut to have been changed.

F12 – Record

3n – Record

Enjoy!
